Debenham House, is a Grade 1 listed building situated in Holland Park, London, and an extremely important example of an Arts and Crafts
building.
Many of the 6000 internal and external de Morgan and Ricardo tiles required restoration, and, working on site, the tiles were carefully
conserved, and if necessary, re-instated and other architectural features restored. Pigments were mixed into coloured fills to match the
background colours, protecting the body of the tile against steam and condensation. They were then painted with a modified epoxy glaze
replacing the missing areas of design. The idea being to lead the eye, allowing the overall effect to be enjoyed without the distraction
of damage.
The tiles on the exterior of the house presented further problems. Some had suffered extensive salt-damage as a result of damp. These
had to be gently removed and soaked in distilled water to dissolve the salts, before any other restoration could be carried out. The
restoration of Debenham was completed in 2004 and since then the house has played host to many public events and appeared in several
television and film productions. It is a truly beautiful house and I have to admit that I am very proud of having been part of its
restoration.
